I’m Jenney Surelia, a tango dancer, teacher and dj with a passion for connected, musical and social dancing. I like to use the idea of ‘connect, communicate and create’ in my workshops as an approach to learning to dance in a couple that makes you adapt, engage and think in the moment.
Social dancing is what I’m really interested in, especially the way how people used to learn to dance in a familial environment in Buenos Aires before the advent of tango schools. It’s all about home grown, made with love dancing. I started a taste of tango in 2005 as a regular class at Pineapple Dance Studios to get more people dancing, to know themselves and be open to others, once you start dancing you’ll realise tango does this to you.
Since then I have taught regular classes, private lessons and workshops in London and other European cities. I have been asked to perform at the Royal Festival Hall, made a BAFTA nominated short, starred in a DJ Shadow video and played my selection of beautiful tango music at milongas and festivals on the continent.
More importantly, I have danced, danced and danced, discovering embraces, people, food and culture. My curiosity for exploring my dance deepened and continues to do so. In 2013 I was invited to teach in Italy and ended up dividing my between London and Livorno, dancing, teaching and DJing.
Now back in London, I teach tango workshops at Pineapple Dances Studios. They are designed to start you dancing straight away. You can find out more about the workshops here. I also teach classes on a Wednesday at the Harry Gosling School, more info here.
