Adriana Varela, Ada Falcon, Tita Merello, Lydia Borda. All female voices in a sea of men singing tango. Now a new voice is being added to the list, her name is Noelia Moncada. Being used to Tango singers arriving on stage dripping in diamantes and the journey of their lives etched on their faces, it's easy to look at the petite Ms Moncada, young, fresh faced, wide eyed and think "What will this girl sing about?"
I was treated to a preview on Saturday night and a treat it was. Shoeless and summer dressed she painted a picture of emotions with her voice. Rich and intense in tango, playful and light in milonga, less than 5 feet away from me she didn't miss a note or a feeling. Her "Marioneta" gave me goosebumps. Have a look here.
Noela is in concert this Wednesday at St Ethelburga's in Bishopsgate, if I wasn't teaching my class at Pineapple, I'd be there.
